Fresh analysis indicates that people who come off blockbuster weight-loss injections like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover reduced body mass far faster than those who end conventional lifestyle regimens.
Research printed in a major health publication shows that while obese people can lose substantial amounts of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the mass returns at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.
"Individuals using such medications should be informed of the potential of quick rebound weight gain when the medication concludes," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of regain implies a reversion to original weight within about one and a half years.
Weighing Treatments
The research, which examined 37 of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the results of GLP-1 agonists with conventional dieting.
Researchers point out that people who shed pounds through lifestyle changes alone usually have a slower creep back—perhaps 100 grams monthly—after stopping.
Understanding the Fast Regain
Doctors propose the mode of action of the drugs is key to understanding the heightened weight return.
GLP-1 drugs copy a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.
"Long-term administration of the hormone concentrations several times higher than normal may cause the system to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and may also reduce sensitivity to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.
"Withdrawal of this hormone supplement results in appetite is unsuppressed, making binge eating much more probable."
A Chronic Condition?
The NHS advise the injections for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.
Professionals contend that, considering the high risk of weight regain, the therapy should be considered life-long.
This view is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who state that the findings "highlight the persistent character of excess weight," similar to managing conditions like hypertension.
User Experiences
Users who have stopped the jabs explain a powerful return of hunger.
"I experienced a switch that goes on and you become starving," recalled one woman.
The struggle is exacerbated if users have not adopted sustainable dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.
Significant Interest
Figures suggest that a significant number of people in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the past year, with demand remaining high.
- Adoption is more common among women compared to men.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest level of interest.
- A large proportion access the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.
Ultimately, experts stress that while the jabs are effective agents for shedding pounds, they are not a magic cure and lasting health benefits relies on combined lifestyle changes.
