A tragic train crash in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel opposition criticisms regarding the pace and management of the country's major public works projects.
The disaster took place on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a rail link built to link the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was intended to provide an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring economic development in the area.
“We are going to rigorously clarify the cause of this incident,” affirmed the head of state.
The official confirmed that, of the some 250 individuals on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in serious condition. The official added plans to go to Oaxaca to confer with those impacted.
Key Undertaking of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a signature public works project of the previous administration, whose presidency ended the prior year. This project was intimately linked to his administration's economic agenda for the southeastern region.
Another multi-billion dollar railway undertaking from that era, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the broader strategy to revitalize the economy of a relatively less developed part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Risks Apprehensions
The construction of both railway systems was supervised by the nation's military, marking a dramatic increase of its role in civilian projects. They were completed at an fast-tracked speed, beating predictions to be partially launched before the end of that presidency.
However, this fast-paced schedule had also fueled persistent concerns over construction quality.
- Sunday's derailment was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This involves an prior collision this month when a train struck a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen several non-lethal derailments.
Calls for Audit and Pause
In the aftermath of the tragedy, the head of a key rival party demanded an urgent halt in the construction and operation of all comparable projects.
This pause was requested until the completion of a comprehensive independent investigation. The party declared that the loss of life "calls for immediate answers."
In response, the head of state asserted that the train had been running in full compliance with all safety requirements. Commitments were given that the government would remain "accountable" in both the construction and running of these strategic projects.
